Springfield farm is nestled in the Duckpit Valley in the heart of the North Downs, an area of outstanding natural beauty. The farm comprises of 400 acres of chalk downland pastures interspersed with woodland and abundant flora and fauna.
The pastures are home to our flock of 700 cross bred and Llyen ewes. The flock grazes for the majority of the year, but is bought back to the home farm just before Easter in time for lambing. Lambing at Springfield farm is a very busy time of the year, with all the family taking part in keeping watch, assisting births, and bottle feeding orphaned lambs.
The flock shares the pastures with our herd of 30 Aberdeen Angus x cows and pedigree Aberdeen Angus bull Rosie. Our calves are born in May out at pasture and are sold on as stores the following spring.
As well as the sheep and the cattle, there are obviously the bronze turkeys, which are reared from 4 weeks old at the home farm. To help us round up the large number of sheep as well as coax the turkeys in to their barn at night, we have a team of 5 Border Collies. As well as being good working dogs they are all great companions.
The farm also has two lovely holiday cottages, Springfield Barn and Springfield Cottage, which are run by Richard and Janet Lockwood. We were very proud to win the 2009 Ashford Cattle Show Farm Diversification competition.
