Springfield farm is nestled in the Duckpit Valley in the heart of the North Downs, an area of outstanding natural beauty. The farm hosts 400 acres of chalk downland pastures interspersed with woodland and abundant flora and fauna.
The pastures are home to our flock of 600 cross bred and Suffolk ewes. The flock grazes for the majority of the year, but is bought back to the home farm just before Easter in time for lambing. Lambing at Springfield farm is a very busy time of the year, with all the family taking part in keeping watch, assisting births, and bottle feeding orphaned lambs.
The flock shares the pastures with out herd of 30 suckler cows, which was started 4 years ago. This year we were very proud to be able to put the first group of homebred heifers to Julius, our resident pedigree Aberdeen Angus bull. Julius came to us last year; he spent a week chasing us and our dogs before settling in to becoming a handsome addition to the herd.
As well as the sheep and the cattle, there is obviously the Christmas turkeys, which are reared from 4 weeks old at the home farm. Other animals include geese, which produced 5 goslings this year, chickens and resident rarebred stag turkey- Basil, who isn’t available for Christmas! We must'nt forget our beloved 4 border collies who work very hard to help us with both the sheep and cattle, as well as leave a muddy mess in the kitchen when they sneak in to sit by the aga!
